"...contend for the
faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints." Jude 3
(The Prayer of Jabez
(Last updated August 3, 2002)
Welcome to my Jabez page! I thought of calling it "Jabez Junk" but that just didn't seem polite enough. We offer here a diverse assortment of Jabez-related materials, original and otherwise.
Newsflash! My review of The Prayer of Jabez was recently published in Preservings, a Canadian journal dedicated to Mennonite history and theology. I'll post a link when the online version is available.
The Prayer of Jabez
Our first real research effort here at Contend4TheFaith deals with The Prayer of Jabez, the mega-hit bestseller. The main article takes a brief look at Jabez from my perspective:
The Prayer of Jabez: A Brief Analysis
I decided to reference the official Jabez web site testimonials in an appendix because they are not written by Wilkinson and therefore are not "officially sanctioned" beyond being displayed on the official site. Click below to read some choice excerpts and my comments:
Appendix: The Prayer of Jabez Testimonials
Britney Spears, Pop Princess of Prayer
Can we claim cultural relevance if we fail to discuss Britney? Hardly. Our ingenious technique is to deal with Britney in light of the Jabez phenomenon.
Randy on the Radio
On July 28, 2001, Randy spent nearly 20 minutes discussing Jabez with host James White on The Dividing Line. He's the first caller, about 40 minutes after the show began. Click here to listen to the program using RealAudio.
Who is Rick George?
My friend Rick George contributed the first "outside" article. His fine article takes more of a philosophical/theological view of the phenomenon than examining the book directly. Click the next link for his take on Jabez:
Jesus Christ, Not Jabez Christ
Charles Spurgeon
Journey back to 1871 with Charles Spurgeon and read his sermon on Jabez.
Hank Hanegraaff
Hank Hanegraaff's The Prayer of Jesus was released in August 2001. I heard Hank read excerpts from it and bought several copies at a pre-release service in July. I recommend his approach as being much more Biblical than The Prayer of Jabez.
Miscellaneous
An excellent and thorough study of Jabez by Ron Gleason can be found on the antithesis site.
Some interesting reviews, for and against, can be found at Epinions.com.
The Mantra of Jabez is a rather biting parody.
