Moondance Alexander is an award-winning family movie about an awkward girl named Moondance (Kay Panabaker) who feels out of place at school and finds happiness when she befriends a Pinto pony she names Checkers. The owner (Don Johnson) trains her to compete in an exclusive jumping competition against some snobby rich girls from her school who look down on her inexpensive clothing and horse. Lori Laughlin plays her hippie-flavored mother, and her antagonist at school is played by Sasha Cohen, better known for Olympic figure skating.
I knew my 13-year-old horse-loving daughter would adore the movie, and although middle school girls are the prime audience, almost everyone will enjoy this movie despite its predictability.
Moondance Alexander won several 2007 film festival awards, including Best Family Feature Film from the Newport Beach Film Festival.
The DVD features a Laura Wright music video, a "behind the scenes" cast interview and more about the soundtrack.
