Beyond Narnia
Directed by Norman Stone
2005 Faith & Values Media

Beyond Narnia surprised me. I was expecting a somewhat dull documentary repeating anecdotes about C. S. Lewis that I'd heard a hundred times before. Instead, writer/director Norman Stone made the brilliant decision to use a first-person narration approach, with Anton Rodgers portraying a mature C. S. Lewis. As he shared accounts of his life, other actors played Lewis at different stages from childhood to maturity.

I didn't learn too much that I hadn't heard before, but Beyond Narnia held my attention because of the presentation. Still, I gained a better understanding of Lewis' childhood, as well as the relationship between Lewis and Joy Gresham and her sons. I also felt more of a connection to Lewis the person simply because of the engaging portrayal by Rodgers. I especially enjoyed the depiction of the real-life children sent from London to escape the bombing by living with Professor Lewis and his brother (sound vaguely familiar?).

I highly recommend Beyond Narnia for all fans of Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia.
